Saving from distress

The Animal Rescue House is a sanctuary for dogs for whom all hope seemed lost. In this shelter located in Plaine des Papayes, survivors of road accidents or abuse are cared for and pampered, with the aim of giving them a second chance. ZA

Some of these dogs have crossed borders to join foster families abroad, after being discovered in Mauritius. They are often tourists who, while visiting the shelter, fall in love with these four-legged companions in search of love and happiness. Others have been adopted locallyand now live in much better conditions, having been through the worst.

Once at the shelter, they are cared for, fed and nurtured to help them regain a taste for life. Lorena and her husband, Dr Keyur Patel, are making every effort to ensure that the reconstruction process is complete. The couple invested in a cozy shelter for up to 60 dogs.

Originally from Switzerland, Lorena was deeply affected by the living conditions of abandoned dogs in Mauritius. “I told myself I had to change things. When I moved here, I created this shelter. The fact that my husband is a vet contributes enormously to the dogs’ well-being,” she explains. All shelter animals are also sterilized.

To carry out their mission, the couple draw on their savings, while awaiting support from the public and generous donors. “Unfortunately, we can’t help them all. But we do our best,” says Lorena. Their greatest reward is to see these animals rejoice.
