At the age of 32, Noémie Barragan thrives on the daily love of “her babies” – the residents of her huge green enclosure at Belle Mare – to whom she has a visceral attachment. for whom she has a visceral attachment!
Trained to train horses and wild animals, this seasoned rider has made animal psychology her specialty, and readily admits that these strange patients are her very own therapy! With infinite gentleness and philanthropy, she rescues all species, protects them, cares for them, repairs them… physically and mentally. Offering them a harmonious community life. Her missions are often quite challenging! “When Sekhmet, the imposing female dromedary, arrived here, she was biting, trampling and dangerous because she was in pain. Today, she’s transformed! Like an abused woman learning to live again. C alm in all circumstances, Noémie smiles as she shows me her scars, scratches, bites… and adds that if a human does her harm, she knows how to return it!
The refuge lives off donations, rides, riding lessons, film shoots, shows around the island and sponsorships. A dozen people work here: people traumatized by life, women in distress, social outcasts… Noémie gives them a chance, if she immediately detects their sensitivity and kindness towards animals! To mistreated horses, sick pigs, three-legged goats, “unattractive” dogs, burn victims, handicapped people… Noémie whispers “not to worry… that not all humans are bad”! Yet she helplessly deplores their lack of benevolence towards the weak and harmless of the wonderful animal world!
