Since last November, four newborn babies have been cared for 24/7 in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Artemis Hospital in Curepipe, in a specialized, calm and comforting environment. From high-risk pregnancies to premature births or potential complications requiring intensive care, the NICU – which adjoins the maternity and neonatology wards, as well as the nursery – offers babies and their mothers rapid medical intervention, a multidisciplinary approach and ongoing monitoring.
To provide families with the best possible support when they return home, our staff listen to their needs and offer invaluable advice. In addition to providing medical care for infants, the nursing team plays an essential role in supporting families,” says Dr. Radhika Jagatsingh, head of the department. Our professionals are trained to support and accompany parents during their child’s hospitalization. We remain at their disposal, aware that this is a difficult time for them. As far as possible, they are allowed to stay with their child 24/7, and encouraged to take part in the care.”
C-Care launches One Life, One Tree
The ecological and social project, in partnership with the NGO Friends of the Environment, contributes to reforestation and the restoration of local biodiversity, while raising awareness among the younger generation. Each time a baby is born in a C-Care facility, a tree is planted and labeled, and a certificate is awarded to the parents. Extending beyond Mauritius, the initiative to reinforce collective environmental responsibility is also taking place in Uganda. C-Care plans to transplant 1,000 native plants in Mauritius and 2,000 in Uganda each year. For C-Care CEO Hélène Echevin, “each tree symbolizes life, optimism and confidence in the future for our children and our planet”.
