GOLF, it hits hard in Mauritius!

Over the decades, Mauritius has developed some of the finest golf courses in the world, attracting an ever-increasing number of Mauritian and foreign players. Today, it proudly boasts a top-level golfing position, hosting championships of international renown. The MCB Championship-Mauritius and the AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Open – back after two long years’ absence, thanks to Covid – rounded off the year with a bang!

11th MCB Championship-Mauritius

The flagship event of the Legends Tour, a tournament reserved for senior champions (over 50 years of age) bringing together the best former international players, the MCB Championship-Mauritius was heldfrom December 6 to 11, 2022 on the legendary Legend Golf Course and Links Golf Course at Constance Belle Mare Plage. The championship combines two Pro-Am events with the Legends Tour event reserved for professional players. Each Pro-Am team is made up of three amateurs and one pro, offering the finest golfers a unique opportunity to measure themselves against the legends, and proving once again that in this discipline, age is an asset, not a handicap. In fact, experience and short game go a long way to compensating for physical performance and power.

Victory this year went to Denmark’s Thomas Bjorn, who even broke the Legend Golf Course course record! He returned to the 2th with 7 birdies and 2 eagles and finished the three rounds at -23! Impressive!

6th edition of the AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Open

Preparing the course for the AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Open mobilized the teams at the new Mont Choisy Le Golf four months before the event, which took place from December 15 to 18, 2022. This superb golf course, the only one of its kind in the north of the island, was the scene of intense competition and a vibrant final! 156 participants, including some of the elite of the world golfing circuit, competed in this DP World Tour tournament. While young Pierre Pellegrin proudly defended the Mauritian colors, France’s Antoine Rozner easily beat Spain’s Alfredo Garcia-Heredia in the final. This victory was the third DP World Tour title for the Parisian, who declared: I couldn’t have asked for a better way to end the year! It was a crazy week. I felt right at home here in Mauritius. The course was top-notch. We were made very welcome.

With its extremely high level of play, the event, which is part of several professional circuits, is broadcast every year on international channels and watched by hundreds of millions of viewers around the world.
