In the thick of Mauritian jazz

Mama Jaz has placed its eighth edition under the sign of harmony… The Mama kreasion 2023 is none other than Éric Triton’s Osmoz Kosmic in quintet, on April 26, at the Caudan Arts Centre, and International Jazz Day will be hosted by Neshen Teeroovengadum at Beau-Plan. Mama Jaz means free concerts every Sunday, great concerts on Wednesdays and a minute’s sharing every day…

Mama Jaz is divided into three parts, with programming that’s finally free from the confines of confinement: free fun with Sweet afternoon sets on Sunday afternoons from3pm to 4:30pm, at the Creative Park in Beau-Plan; big concerts on Wednesday evenings at the Caudan Arts Centre (CAC); and every day, a minit mazik video broadcast on social networks.

Viv Larmoni! is the motto of this new edition, which opens up to outside winds with Korean pianist Hanbin Lee presenting his Poetic solo on April 19 in Port-Louis, and the sextet of Réunionnais Luc Joly revealing his Gran Bekar onApril 12. As a child prodigy, Rouhangeze returns to the country to perfume the atmosphere with her enchanting voice, in a duet with pianist and composer Tomasz Bura, on April 5. Also at the CAC, Mauritian swing and blues master Éric Triton has surrounded himself with the finest instrumentalists in the genre, to create an Osmoz Kosmik, a major new concert scheduled for April 26, with Christophe Bertin, Belingo Faro, Ashley Spéville and Philippe Thomas!

Open-air and free of charge Sweet afternoon sets feature the Philippe Thomas trio on April 2, JYSE XP with saxophonist Jean-Noël Ladouce in quartet on April 9, the Kolektif Desvaux/Bertin on April 16 and the Samuel Laval Quartet on April 23. For International Jazz Day on April 30, guitarist Neshen Teeroovengadum and his friends will be on hand for a grand Mama Fet, adding their feeling to the celebrations of this fraternal, stateless and universal music!

Density, charm, elegance

Are you talking to me?, the first volume in a series of albums by Philippe Thomas, was launched onFebruary18at theCAC, in a dense, brilliant and wonderfully nourishing concert. Returning in 2000 to enrich the Mauritian music scene after his American experience, this brass genius intends to mark a milestone, to leave his mark…

About the title, he jokingly recounts that he often talks to his mirror in the manner of de Niro in Taxi Driver… This question above all illustrates the free, communicative and joyfully chatty jazz he distills into six tracks in the spirit of Parker and Coltrane, with his friends Kersley Pytambar on double bass, Christophe Bertin on drums, Olivier David and Samuel Saïde on piano. This concert offered the poetry of a guitar/trumpet conversation with Éric Triton as special guest (T & T Mood) andalready revealed some sega jazz from the next volume with Roger Thomas and Linley Marthe.

Philippe Thomas is a magician whohas found the gold of time through technical surpassing and sonic innovation.
