Also present in France and Switzerland (the founders’ home countries), Indies World has been transforming the lives of stray Mauritians since 2020! From rescues and medical care to rigorous international adoption procedures, its initiatives are numerous and… indispensable!

As in many countries, stray dogs represent a major defi for local authorities and organizations in Mauritius. Overpopulated – 200,000 were recorded on the streets in 2022, i.e. almost 16% of the population – their reproduction remains uncontrolled.
Cindy Gavin moved to the island in 2017, with her sister Malika joining her in 2020. Together, they have made defending animal rights their sole mission. If the Baie du Cap shelter bears the name of the first puppy taken in, abandoned and starving, today it is the voice of all distressed pooches on the street. Recruited and trained, the volunteers work to eradicate animal abuse. Indies World takes in, protects and treats animals for illness, injury and aggression. Downstream, it raises awareness of the need for sterilization, raises funds, finds foster families… to prevent brutal captures, among other things.
In addition to working with vets and carers, the dedicated team rehabilitates the dogs physically and emotionally, and socializes them (play sessions, walks, interaction, education, etc.), with a view to getting them adopted. Fifty of them have already found homes, in Mauritius or abroad. Faced with an urgent situation (lack of space, lease expires in 2024), the association has found its new address! But to acquire the site, fit it out, adapt it, create play areas, educational and medical facilities… Indies World needs volunteers, sponsors, donors… Animal lovers, get involved, support this community mission!
