Marine Technical School, take to the water with KRN!

Supported by the Kolektif Rivier Nwar (KRN), some fifteen young people in precarious situations are trained in nautical trades. In its new workshop at Lakaz Sosial Harmonie, the school is preparing to complete its pilot year, which began in March 2022.

This apprenticeship, whose aim is to train competent ship maintenance technicians and future skippers, is aimed at vulnerable but serious and committed candidates! Created by KRN project manager Vashil Jasgray, along with expert professional trainers Guillano Coureur and Raj Dookhy, the program offers 40% theory and 60% practice. Technical training in engine and equipment repair, as well as courses in sea rescue, hospitality, finance and IT, life and soft skills (functional literacy, interpersonal skills…).

The KRN has surrounded itself with solid local partners. Chantier Naval de l’Océan Indien, for its sponsorship and placement of trainees. HSBC Mauritius and its 80% financing. Reef Conservation, for its awareness-raising sessions on the coastal and marine environment, in Case Noyale and Le Morne. Beachcomber Training Academy and its hospitality courses preparing students for service on board and handling “difficult customers”.

Unforeseen and unanticipated costs (uniforms, transportation of students, cost of certain interventions) are the lot of a pilot year, but the success of this one, coupled with the motivation of Vashil Jasgray and his team, augurs well for the project’s future! And while certification is currently provided by MITD, the facility is aiming to become an accredited training center, with a national MQA-approved program. And we approve!
