Moris Ikonik, original, subtle, charming

It took over a year of collective work, or rather, passionate collaboration, to bring out the very first opus from In Other Words Éditions, the long-awaited Moris Ikonik. Delphine Raimond

The three co-directors of this young publishing house – Elena Boulart, Mélissa Leclézio and Sandra Mussard – wrote the book with the support of Thomas Jean Louis for the poems in Creole and Camille Grenouille, as well as talented graphic designers, illustrators and photographers. In text and images, a singular look at Mauritius takes us into its history and culture… around 50 emblems that shape its identity; from the solo papaya to the dodo savate, from the Chinese pharmacy to the coconut broom…

Published in two versions, French and English, this modern, elegant work is an immersion in the heart of Mauritius’s heritage, awakening or reawakening a smile, a memory, a nostalgic moment, a forgotten essence, a bygone era, a familiar, endearing story… Emblematic characters, canonical events, symbolic places or objects, authentic culinary specialties… Moris Ikonik is for everyone, culture lovers, photography enthusiasts, island lovers… It takes Mauritians, expatriates, tourists… And offers deserved visibility to local artists and cultural industries.

Driven by a number of committed patrons – led by Absa Bank Mauritius – a tremendous surge of solidarity and identity financed the production and printing of the book; find out more about them on the website. Jennifer Johnson, Head of Marketing and Corporate Relations at Absa Mauritius, said at the book launch at Creative Park in Beau Plan: “Every story deserves to be heard and told. Elena, Mélissa, Sandra, your passions, your talent, shine through on every page. Much more than a book, it’s a delicate ode to the soul of Maurice.”

Priced at Rs 2,890, Moris Ikonik is already on sale at The Hive Marketplace in the Mont Choisy mall and at the My Pop-Up Store in Nouvelle Usine and Tamarin. Very soon, it will join Bookcourt bookshops (Caudan, La Croisette, Trianon, Bagatelle and Tribeca), Le Trèfles in Curepipe and Le Cygne in Rose-Hill; My Pop-Up Store in Bagatelle; the Design Shop at Caudan Arts Centre; Maison Filao in Tamarin and Pressebook at Ruisseau Créole in Rivière Noire.
