Orthopaedics, C-Care gets us back on our feet!

At our four facilities – Darné, Grand Baie, Welkin, Tamarin – C-Care’s orthopedic surgeons ensure our musculoskeletal health and post-trauma recovery. Dr Daren Lim Fat explains. Delphine Raimond

“I work with people who have joint pain, often in the back, knees, shoulder… leading to a lack of movement in these parts of the body, and therefore problems walking, exercising or even sleeping,” says the orthopedic surgeon. We spend up to 45% of our time on our feet, so our bone and joint well-being is fundamental. Dr Lim Fat defines orthopaedics as “a branch of medicine that deals with the quality of human life” and sees his profession as “a science, an art, to help people regain their mobility”.

Having practiced for twenty years in Ireland and other European countries, he readily acknowledges the international standards of C-Care facilities, but also insists on the skills of the teams and the human factor! What would be the point of all this state-of-the-art equipment without qualified staff in all branches of medicine? The orthopedic departments are responsible for treating sports injuries, fitting complex prostheses, performing arthroscopic surgery (shoulder, knee, etc.) or more complex operations (spinal column, etc.), and providing specialized treatments such as platelet-rich plasma transfusions for osteoarthritis patients. Also, because physiotherapy is a central treatment modality in orthopedics, the two departments work closely together, and the team of physiotherapists ensures effective rehabilitation that benefits both patient and doctor.

For good bone health, the doctor concludes, “Eat healthy, “We are what we eat!” and stay active!”
