Qi gong. Martial art… breath of life!

Christophe Thevenau is one of the few certified tai chi and qi gong coaches in Mauritius. He has expertise in both martial arts, which he has been practicing since he was fifteen, and has been initiating them for the past eight years.

Harmony in imbalance

Warm-ups, breathing exercises, standing meditation and traditional movements; Christophe details a typical session. “Qi gong (like tai chi) requires good concentration and attention to breathing creating a state of mindfulness, meditation in motion. As you perform these movements, you may feel physically unbalanced, leaning to one side or shifting your weight from one leg to the other. But as practice progresses, we learn to work with this imbalance, so that it becomes a source of harmony rather than an obstacle. Tai chi and qi gong teach us to face the uncertainties, challenges and imbalances of everyday life with calm. To accept and integrate them, rather than fight against them. To find inner harmony, even in the midst of stressful or unstable situations.

Benefits in practice

Through qi gong, Christophe transmits to his students “a sense of well-being, far removed from stress and an overactive lifestyle”. He advocates slow life and full awareness… of the moment, sensations, thoughts and emotions. To achieve relaxation and release of the body, breathing must be fluid, calm and deep… and in harmony with gestures, which are said to open when inhaling – which energizes and recharges – and close when exhaling – which cleanses and relaxes.

Regular practice helps reduce stress, anxiety and mental tension. Improves posture, balance and mobility. Strengthens the immune system. Generates a benevolent energy of gratitude, kindness, love, compassion… towards ourselves and others.
