Sterilization at your fingertips

From the end of February, Moris Steriliz Ou Zanimo’s new mobile sterilization van will be criss-crossing the island, equipped with the necessary equipment and qualified staff. Supported by Espace Maison, this initiative reinforces the NGO’s commitment to combating animal abuse, and marks a step forward in raising awareness among Mauritians. ZA

“Power is only useful if you want to do something negative. Otherwise, love is enough to do everything else.” This Charlie Chaplin quote, displayed on the green background of the mobile unit’s vehicle, perfectly illustrates the philosophy that has driven the NGO since 2021. At the time, its founder, Manon Luigi Monty, was deeply moved by the distress and cruelty suffered by some 300,000 abandoned animals in Mauritius. She decided to react by presenting sterilization as a solution.

After awareness-raising, adoption and sterilization campaigns on social networks and in the field, the association is now taking a new step. Every month, its van will set up in one of the Espace Maison store parking lots, where owners can have their pets sterilized free of charge by vets.

“Before each campaign, we will be present in the region concerned to raise awareness of the importance of sterilization and to take a census of the animals,” explains Manon Luigi Monty. The van, specially fitted out, is equipped with all the necessary equipment to enable two vets to operate in optimal conditions.

Financial support of Rs 1,175,000 was presented by Espace Maison to Moris Steriliz Ou Zanimo at an official ceremony attended by the Minister of Agro-industry, Arvin Boolell. This project will evolve over the course of the first interventions, to maximize its impact and contribute to the sustainable improvement of animal conditions in Mauritius.
